So it depends on what you're looking for out of this type of game. Overall, my main impression is that Starbound is better as a building simulator, while the gameplay / combat of Planet Centauri is better. Its cooking system is not as robust as Starbound, but this makes it feel much more meaningful to the game. Centauri has a brilliant system where you gain permanent stat upgrades every time you eat a food item you haven't eaten before. Hopefully this will also improve over time.

It will generate continuous areas inside the core of planets that have interesting set pieces in them, while Centauri's terrain generator is much more basic, with most planets being mostly flat with occasional gashes cut out of them. Starbound seems to have a better world generator. Hopefully this will change in future releases. At current, furniture like beds do nothing in Centauri, which makes base-building feel a bit pointless. If played properly, death is almost never a threat in Starbound (except from falling), while in Centauri you will die a ton unless you're absurdly careful. Similarly, Centauri's enemies are much more varied and threatening. This makes combat feel more responsive and just better in general. Starbound is very floaty and a bit slow in terms of movement, whereas Centauri feels more like a traditional platformer. Unlike other games of a similar genre, the start of Planet Centauri begins with a really well-developed character editor: a wide assortment of not only different clothes, but also unique features of appearance is provided for the player to choose from.
